In April 2005 BHCC stopped locking/unlocking park gates across Brighton & Hove, for budgetary reasons.

Local residents were very concerned that there would be an increase in anti-social behaviour, late-night noise etc. So with agreement from BHCC a number of volunteers formed the Gate-locking Group.

We now have about 18 keyholders, and during British Summer Time we unlock the gates by 8am, and lock up at 8pm or dusk, whichever is later.

This approach has proved largely successful. Our flexibility over locking times (BHCC used to lock at 6pm) together with our getting to know the local groups of teenagers, has resulted in less problem behaviour than in previous years.

We are also in regular contact with BHCC, local Police and Community Officers, so as to address issues when they arise.
